Moulton woman says she lost job for sporting Kerry sticker on car

MOULTON — Lynne Gobbell never imagined the cost of a John Kerry-John Edwards bumper sticker could run so high.

Gobbell of Moulton didn't pay a cent for the sticker that she proudly displays on the rear windshield of her Chevrolet Lumina, but said it cost her job at a local factory after it angered her boss, Phil Gaddis.

Gaddis, a Decatur bankruptcy attorney, owns Enviromate, a cellulose insulation company in Moulton.

Gaddis did not return phone calls from THE DAILY about the alleged Thursday firing.

Gobbell said she consulted a lawyer, but then changed her mind about going to see him. She said she has cried about the incident and must do without income for three weeks while the state unemployment commission decides if she is eligible for compensation.

Gobbell said she was averaging 50 to 60 hours a week on the plant's bagging machine.

“The lady there (at the unemployment commission) said that she has never heard of a firing like this before,” Gobbell said.

Gobbell gave this account:

“We were going back to work from break, and my manager told me that Phil said to remove the sticker off my car or I was fired,” she said. “I told him that Phil couldn't tell me who to vote for. He said, 'Go tell him.' ”

She went to Gaddis' office, knocked on the door and entered on his orders.

“Phil and another man who works there were there,” she said. “I asked him if he said to remove the sticker and he said, 'Yes, I did.' I told him he couldn't tell me who to vote for. When I told him that, he told me, 'I own this place.' I told him he still couldn't tell me who to vote for.”

Gobbell said Gaddis told her to “get out of here.”

“I asked him if I was fired and he told me he was thinking about it,” she said. “I said, 'Well, am I fired?' He hollered and said, 'Get out of here and shut the door.' ”

She said her manager was standing in another room and she asked him if that meant for her to go back to work or go home. The manager told her to go back to work, but he came back a few minutes later and said, ” 'I reckon you're fired. You could either work for him or John Kerry,' ” Gobbell said.

“I took off my gloves and threw them in the garbage and left,” Gobbell said.

Though she is unemployed and uncertain if she will get her job back, Gobbell said, she doesn't regret her decision to keep the sticker on her windshield.

“I would like to find another job, but I would take that job back because I need to work,” she said. “It upset me and made me mad that he could put a letter in my check expressing his (political) opinion, but I can't put something on my car expressing mine.”

She was referring to a flier that she said Gaddis placed in employee envelopes to remind them of the positive impact that President Bush's policies have had on them. An employee at the plant who would not identify himself confirmed the contents of the letter.

Gobbell provided a copy of the flier. It says:

“Just so you will know, because of the Bush tax (cut):
I was able to buy the new Hammer Mill
I was able to finance our receivables
I was able to get the new CAT skid steer
I was able to get the wire cutter
I was able to give you a job”

It further says:

“You got the benefit of the Bush tax cut. Everyone did.”

Now, I'm not going to tell anyone what they should do… but if you feel like getting in touch with Philip A. Geddes (the reporter has somehow corrupted his name) to express your opinion about his actions in this matter, his contact information is available to anyone who wants to find it. I've already found it, so here it is:

Office
GEDDES, PHILIP A.
619 BANK ST,

Phone: (256) 350-0229

Home

What you do with that information is up to you… but you should do something with it. Personally, I'm going to let Mr. Geddes know that I think that what he's done is downright fascist, un-American, and completely against anyone's definition of “freedom,” aside from maybe Stalin or Mussolini or Hitler. He's a lawyer, so he should know better… but since he obviously doesn't, maybe somebody out there, or maybe lots of somebodies, needs to explain it to him.

As anyone who reads my journal knows, I don't support either John Kerry or Dubya in their bids for continued political power. On the other hand, I do strongly support the ideal of free speech as well as the rights of workers, and it's clear that Mr. Geddes thinks that money can buy him immunity. However, he can't fire anyone who doesn't work for him, and he shouldn't be allowed his petty dictatorship with impugnity.

Ack, RSS feeds while I look for a job are dangerous, off to call the USPS.  Let's see what it takes there.

Nice

A talking virus

Doesn't this rock? Seriously people give me crap for sticking with ME. Other than the obvious heartache it causes when I get all download happy with new programs and forget to configure them correctly it's been nice. We just have to watch our HD space we keep getting a virus in our system restore folder which then replicates and eats up all our free space. Twice now. But we are armed! Anyway enjoy the article.

Jobless but not homeless

So I've been “let go” from my job. I figured it'd be coming, but not this soon. I think I am just more irrate at the timing rather than the actual firing. We were trying to get a car and get daycare taken care of for the lil one. I've already got a line on a new job and I hope that they call with the good news soon. I am calling around trying to get infor on businesses that ask for a faxed resume. You know I figure if I have the right company name on my cover letter that might make me a bit more hirable. Im also looking into teller positions, I think my wife would appreciate me having to dress up for work everyday. She likes it when I dress up. I am still looking for a car since that would aid in my job search and moving around the city to get to my future job.

I think this releasing me from my job was a blessing in disgiuse, since I probably wouldn't have left it for far much longer. I think secretly I wanted to last til the Xmas party so I could get blitzed instead of my significant other for once. ;P I keep murmuring to myself that “everything happens for a reason.” For once it is not a hiding from the truth mantra. I've seen it in action. My wife just got her financial aid dispursment and we finally got her back pay for the checks that were missed last month as well. The financial windfall was greatly needed and appreciated in this time of need. I just really hope we find a car real soon so we can move on with our lives and not get stuck in a rut. A couple of my friends have been trying to find new jobs and hitting a few snags as well. I appreciate my friend Pam for her constant encouragement right now. She keeps calling to ask me about the job search and make sure if we have enough money and such to get by right now. I think her recent bout with job searching has shown her how easy it is to fall in a funk and she doesn't want to me to fall into one. Thanx again Pam.

Things seem to be going along swimmingly and I just hope I can rebuild from here. We shall see right? I do take monetary donations if you are so inclined ;P
